This year, the Grade One students at Hurlyvale Primary School demonstrated their community spirit in a big way for Mandela Day by participating in Hospice East Rand’s annual Bring-A-Thing fundraiser. They eagerly gathered items from their homes to donate, which will be sold in Hospice’s charity shops to support patients with life-threatening illnesses who need care but cannot afford it.
In addition to their donations, the students created special drawings to brighten the days of Hospice patients, adding a personal touch of kindness and cheer. Jonquil Siepman from Hospice East Rand expressed heartfelt thanks, acknowledging how crucial these contributions are to the organization. “The enthusiasm and generosity of these young students and their families significantly bolster our ability to help those in need,” Jonquil noted. She praised the students for their efforts and the positive atmosphere they brought to the event, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in sustaining vital services.
The support from Hurlyvale Primary not only provides much-needed resources but also instills a sense of active citizenship among the students, reinforcing the importance of giving back. Thanks to their efforts, the fundraiser was a great success, showcasing the power of community support in making a tangible difference.
